How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “Tile, aluminum, plain or coated, in boxes — NMFC 182310, Class 85.” This prevents carrier reclass and keeps rating consistent.
- Use rigid cartons with corner and edge protectors. Add foam or corrugated dividers between tiles to stop scuffing, especially for coated finishes.
- Palletize boxed tiles with no overhang; strap twice in each direction and stretch-wrap with corner boards and a top sheet. Keep cartons oriented flat to prevent bending.
- If delivering to jobsites or retail stores, request liftgate and appointment services. Count and label each box clearly to reduce shorts during cross-dock handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 means predictable LTL rates and fewer reclass fees—no density calculations required.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork delays.
- Boxed-packaging requirement aligns with terminal handling, lowering damage risk and claims costs for finished aluminum surfaces.
- Clear NMFC reference (182310) speeds quoting and supports better contract negotiations for construction and architectural supply shipments.
