How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm density under NMFC Item 170: measure the exterior length, width, and height of the complete shipping unit (box, crate, or palletized packages), then divide weight by cubic feet to select the correct class.
  2. Match packaging to the sub-type: air heaters/A/C use Package 272; lighting devices and lenses use Packages 1288 or 2191; freight air-brake compressors ship in Package 2328. Note these on the BOL to prevent reclass.
  3. Protect fragile and flexible pieces—body panels, glazed windows, sunroofs, and louvers—with edge guards, foam, and rigid crates; mark Do Not Stack and Up arrows to avoid flexing and glass breakage.
  4. For molded pickup bed liners and large plastic shrouds, nest with slip sheets or dunnage, strap to a skid, and block movement so surfaces don’t chafe. Heavy hubs and axle shafts need double-wall cartons and blocking/bridging.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-driven pricing lets you right-size cartons and crates, lowering the freight class and trimming LTL spend without changing service levels.
  • Packaging compliance (using the correct NMFC packages like 272, 1288/2191, 2328) reduces reclass/reweigh fees and strengthens claims defense.
  • Smart consolidation—palletizing smaller cartons (clips, fasteners, hubcaps) into a cubic, shrink-wrapped unit—cuts handling charges and improves dock throughput.
  • Non-hazardous category streamlines paperwork and accelerates quoting and tendering across common carriers.
