How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid long boxes with foam or cardboard inserts, cap the probe tip, and tape sampling slots closed to prevent punctures during LTL handling.
- When shipping multiples, separate each probe with dividers or sleeves to avoid metal-to-metal abrasion, then bundle inside the master box to control movement.
- Keep lengths within carrier thresholds to avoid oversize fees (for example, under 96 inches when possible) and note dimensions after boxing for accurate quotes.
- Label cartons “Grain Probes (Samplers) — Tools” and tender as NMFC 184690, Class 100; density entry isn’t required, but list carton count and size on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 provides predictable rating, reducing reclass risk and surprise charges.
- Non-hazardous designation speeds tendering and avoids hazmat surcharges or special paperwork.
- Boxed tooling can consolidate with other hardware on a pallet, lowering handling and minimum charges.
- Proper boxing and tip protection cut damage claims, preserving instrument accuracy and total landed cost.
