How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Nest multiple hods and pad the lips with corrugated or foam, then strap the stack to a 48x40 pallet to cut cube and prevent edge dings.
- If handles are removable, ship them detached and bundled; otherwise, cap the handle ends and block them so they can’t puncture adjacent freight.
- Choose sturdy packaging: double-wall cartons for single units or a plywood crate for mixed tool loads; add corner protectors where the V-side meets the box.
- Mark the BOL as “Brick/Mortar Hods, steel or aluminum, nested, handles detached, non-haz” and provide exact piece count and pallet dimensions for accurate LTL quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Nesting and handle removal reduce dimensional weight, lowering LTL charges on bulk shipments to job sites or distributors.
- Clear item naming within the Tools group helps prevent reclass fees and speeds approvals with carriers and 3PL rating engines.
- Protective packing around the hod lip cuts OS&D claims, keeping projects on schedule and avoiding replacement costs.
- Standard palletization improves cross-dock handling efficiency, minimizing accessorials tied to special handling or overhang.
