How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pad and guard sharp points on cant hooks, swamp hooks, and skidding tongs; use tip caps and corrugated wraps, then crate or box to satisfy the “in packages” requirement.
- For long pike poles, choose heavy-wall tubes or a wood crate, cap both ends, and strap to a pallet so they won’t roll or spear adjacent freight.
- Consolidate small steel parts (lug hooks, pins, fittings) in inner cartons, then master-pack and band with corner protectors to create one forklift-ready handling unit.
- On the BOL, state “NMFC 185130, Class 70 — Logging Tools/Parts,” include piece count, materials (steel/wood), and packaging type (crate, tube, bundle) for clean billing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing audit disputes.
- Protective packaging around hooks and points cuts rewrap fees and lowers claim risk.
- Combining parts into fewer packages reduces handling touches and accessorial exposure.
- Planning for long-length policies on pike poles helps avoid surprise fees and keeps LTL rates competitive.
