How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid end caps and sleeves on each mandrel, then strap in V-blocks to a pallet so the shaft can’t roll or bend during LTL handling.
- For long pieces, choose a pallet or crate longer than the mandrel; mark Do Not Fork Ends and keep overhang at 0 in to prevent damage.
- Protect threads, keys, and bearing seats with guards or foam; oil-wrap steel to reduce corrosion risk in transit.
- Describe on the BOL: "Mandrels, saw or pneumatic tire forming, NMFC 185175, Class 77.5, non-hazardous" to avoid reclass or inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 eliminates density calculations, enabling faster quotes and fewer reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges.
- Proper crating and restraint reduce claim frequency on slender shafts, lowering total landed cost.
- Consistent classification lets saw shops and tire plants consolidate mandrels on one BOL and negotiate better LTL rates.
