How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 185490 and Class 85 on the BOL to prevent reclass, especially when sending heavy foundry patterns to job sites or machine shops.
- Protect critical pattern faces and cores with foam and caps, then brace inside a crate or band to a skid; mark lift points to avoid tine damage.
- For long or irregular patterns (e.g., radiator or tub forms), use 96-inch pallets, add 2x4 blocking, and label as non-stackable to control overhang risk.
- Shipping multiple patterns? Separate with dunnage, tag each piece for orientation, and provide weight distribution notes so carriers can load without tip hazards.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 simplifies quotes across LTL carriers for cast iron and steel patterns.
- Fewer surprise charges by citing the exact NMFC; reduces reclass and inspection fees common with heavy tooling.
- Faster tendering for construction, HVAC, and foundry projects by standardizing paperwork and avoiding density calculations.
- Lower claim risk when crated and blocked correctly, preserving precision pattern surfaces and project timelines.
