How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 185540 and Class 70 on the BOL, and note “hand-operated, not machine or power tool held” to prevent misclassification with powered tampers or attachments.
- For loose tools, band handles together, cap cutting edges, and shrink-wrap to a 4-way pallet; add corner boards and top cap to guard against stack pressure.
- When shipping mixed paving tools, crate heavy steel heads low with blocking and bracing, and secure lighter handles separately to avoid punctures in transit.
- Jobsite deliveries are rough—use hardwood skids, 2+ steel straps, and clear lift points so carriers can handle heavy rammers and tampers without damage claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: a fixed Class 70 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and cutting reclass fees.
- Cleaner billing and fewer disputes by clearly separating non-powered hand tools from machinery or power-held accessories.
- Better damage prevention with edge guards and blocked crates, reducing OS&D costs and delivery delays.
- Streamlined LTL consolidation of paving tools lets you plan consistent freight rates across branches and projects.
