How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Nest X-frame sawbucks to minimize cube, strap pairs at the top and base, and secure on a 48x40 pallet with wood dunnage between contact points.
- When shipping knocked down (K/D), bag and tape all fasteners to one unit, label “Hardware Enclosed,” and wrap ends to prevent chafing or loss.
- Shield wood surfaces from scuffs and moisture: use edge protectors under banding, add slip sheets under feet, and apply a light stretch-wrap to keep legs closed.
- List on the BOL: “Sawbucks, wooden — NMFC 185770, non-haz,” include set counts, and request liftgate or jobsite delivery when shipping directly to field crews.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Named-item listing with no class range helps prevent reclass charges and rebills, giving predictable quotes.
- Nesting and tight bundling reduce occupied cube, improving trailer utilization and lowering LTL rates.
- Purposeful packaging cuts handling time at docks and reduces OS&D claims on wood surfaces and joints.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and broadens carrier options for faster tendering.
