How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the freight as “Pipeline Scrapers (Pipeline Pigs), NOI” on the BOL with NMFC 185820 and Class 77.5; density data isn’t needed since the class is fixed.
- Package pigs to prevent cup or disc deformation: use double‑wall cartons or a wood crate with foam blocking around urethane/rubber elements and edge protectors on steel mandrels.
- Palletize thoughtfully: place heavier steel-bodied pigs low, keep diameters separated by cardboard dividers, and band/strap to the pallet to stop rolling or shifting.
- Mark handling cues such as “Do Not Stack,” “Keep Flat,” and orientation arrows; for instrumented pigs, cap sensor ports and wrap individually to avoid impact damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 77.5 minimizes reclass fees and speeds up rate quoting for LTL lanes.
- Lower risk profile: non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier selection.
- Streamlined operations: NOI in packages lets you ship mixed sizes and materials under one code, reducing admin time.
- Fewer claims: packaging guidance tailored to cups/discs and steel cores protects high-value pigs and cuts replacement costs.
