How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack metal hoods in sturdy boxes or crates that meet Package 2170; add foam edge guards and cross-bracing to protect the crown, corners, and hinge points.
- If the hood includes integral fenders, block and pad the fender sections separately inside the same crate to prevent flexing and crease damage during LTL handling.
- Print the BOL with “NMFC 18600, Class 250, Non-Haz” and show piece count and packaging type (e.g., 1 crate) for clean pickup and fewer inspection delays.
- Provide exact exterior dimensions and weight of the packed box/crate for rating and capacity planning, and mark “Do Not Stack” unless the crate is stack-rated.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 250 removes density debates, reducing reclass fees and speeding up quotes for dealers, body shops, and aftermarket distributors.
- Packaging to Package 2170 standards cuts claim risk for dents and bends on large panel surfaces, saving replacement and refinish costs.
- Clear NMFC mapping helps consolidate shipments of body panels, improving dock flow and minimizing accessorials tied to misidentified freight.
- Accurate labeling and standard packaging shorten dwell times at terminals, improving on-time performance and customer satisfaction.
