How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm packaging: single fenders go in heavy-duty boxes with foam and edge guards; multi-piece orders perform best in plywood crates or Package 2171-compliant packs.
- Block and brace to stop flexing: add rib protectors, separate each fender with foam sheets, and prevent metal-to-metal rub that causes paint-prep rework.
- Measure the arc correctly: record the longest length, height, and depth after packing to avoid oversize charges on bulky, lightweight parts.
- Label clearly for dock teams: mark left/right part numbers, fragile edges, and “Do Not Stack” unless crated; photograph before close-up for claims support.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduced damage and refinishing costs by controlling edge dings and scuffing common with exposed body panels.
- Fewer reclass and inspection delays when packaging matches NMFC expectations (boxes, crates, or Package 2171).
- Better rate negotiations through consistent, stackable crate builds that improve cube and handling efficiency.
- Faster receiving for dealers and body shops with clear part IDs and orientation, cutting cycle time on repairs.
