How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack each torch in a sturdy corrugated box with foam around the nozzle and trigger; cap the tip to prevent punctures.
- Exclude fuel cylinders and aerosol propellants; this line item covers the tool only and keeps the shipment non-hazardous.
- List NMFC 186670, Class 100 on the BOL and mark “boxed” so carriers don’t apply density-based reclass.
- Palletize tight: use edge protectors, stretch wrap, and keep cartons inside the pallet footprint to avoid bent wands or crushed cartons.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at Class 100 without density math, accelerating quotes and tenders.
- Non-hazmat status avoids hazmat fees and special carrier handling, lowering total landed cost.
- Clear boxing requirement reduces reclass penalties and dispute time for HVAC, plumbing, and roofing suppliers.
- Damage reduction from boxed packing cuts claim rates and keeps installers and field crews on schedule.
