How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Fold and lock the stand legs, then strap them to the center post. Pad the jaws, screw, and chain with cardboard or foam to prevent abrasion.
- For loose shipments, band each unit to a 48x40 pallet in two directions. Keep the center of gravity low and block the feet to prevent tipping.
- If a tool tray is present, empty loose contents and secure the tray. Cap sharp feet and vise jaws; use corner protectors under steel bands.
- Shipping multiples? Alternate vise heads, interleaf with corrugated, and limit stack height unless crated. Mark the BOL with NMFC 186770, Class 70 to avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing billing disputes.
- Combined description covers pipe vises with stands in one line item, cutting documentation time and reclass risk.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges for predictable costs.
- Allows loose or packaged methods, optimizing for quick jobsite returns or palletized LTL to lower cost per unit.
