How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid corrugated boxes with partitions or trays so wood and wood‑and‑metal tops don’t rub or crush; add poly bags to contain dust from fiber or composition pieces.
- Keep small parts contained: inner bags or chipboard sleeves inside each carton, then fill voids with kraft paper; label cartons “Small Parts—Do Not Break Down.”
- Palletize on a 40×48 GMA pallet with no overhang; strap and wrap tightly and add a top cap to prevent top‑load damage on tapered plugs; keep stack height moderate for stability.
- Quote and tender at Class 70; density isn’t required. On the BOL, describe as “Bottle Stopper Tops—composition/fiber/wood/wood‑and‑metal, boxed, non‑hazardous.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 70 minimizes reclass risk and helps closure makers, wineries, distilleries, and cosmetic packagers budget freight accurately.
- Faster acceptance: non‑hazmat boxed parts fit standard LTL networks, reducing tender rejections and shortening dock dwell times.
- Lower claims: box‑and‑partition packing protects finished wood caps and metal inserts from abrasion and denting, cutting damage costs.
- Process efficiency: one NMFC for multiple materials simplifies quoting, audits, and rate negotiations—no density calculations or special dimensions needed.
