How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm non-hazmat status: remove fuel, detach gas cylinders, purge lines, and cap fittings. If a specialized note applies, review items 186971–186973 before tendering.
- Calculate density for classing: measure the packed piece and weigh it. Example: 30×24×24 in = 10 cu ft; 180 lb ÷ 10 = 18 pcf, which places it within the 50–400 range.
- Package to protect leads and torch heads: palletize heavy welders, block and brace, strap power cords, and use foam or double-wall for torch assemblies and small parts.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Torches or Welders, or Parts, NOI – NMFC 186970, Non-Hazardous, Item 170 compliant.” Add serial/part numbers and photos for claim support.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoid hazmat surcharges and restricted carrier networks by shipping dry, purged equipment labeled non-hazardous.
- Leverage density-based pricing: compact inverter welders and dense parts often secure lower classes and better LTL rates.
- Use a single NOI coverage for mixed parts to reduce reclass risks and simplify procurement-to-shipment workflows.
- Stronger packaging reduces damage claims, field downtime, and return freight, protecting margins on service jobs and OEM deliveries.
