How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 187000 and Class 200 on the BOL, and specify steel SU sections with the longest piece length to pre-clear overlength handling.
- Bundle lattice panels or angle-iron sections on timber dunnage with steel strapping, edge protectors, and flange/bolt caps; mark center of gravity and provide 4-way fork access.
- Use carriers experienced with long, rigid freight; for 12–40 ft sections consider volume LTL or partial truckload to reduce long-freight fees and transfers.
- Protect galvanized finishes with interleaving and corner guards; request tarping if moving on open-deck, and avoid stacking by using cribbing and load diagrams.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 200 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass disputes.
- Proper bundling and declared overlength lower damage risk and prevent surprise accessorials.
- Clear NMFC use (187000) improves billing accuracy and strengthens carrier negotiations on long-freight surcharges.
- Non-hazardous steel commodity streamlines paperwork, enabling faster pickups and fewer compliance delays.
