How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm NOI fit: traps for animals, birds, fish or insects, plus flypaper and electric insect-killing devices packaged in boxes or crates, subject to Item 170.
  2. Calculate density to pick the class: measure the external box/crate in inches, convert to cubic feet, then divide weight. Example: 36x24x18 in at 70 lb ≈ 9 cu ft → 7.8 pcf.
  3. Package by product type: pad steel jaws and springs; bundle small traps; double-box electric insect killers with foam and remove or secure bulbs; seal flypaper to prevent adhesive transfer.
  4. Label clearly: “NMFC 187120 Traps NOI,” include piece count and orientation arrows, and block/brace inside the crate to prevent movement during LTL handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based rating lets you lower freight class by increasing packing efficiency or consolidating units, reducing LTL costs on bulky trap assortments.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, speeding tender-to-pickup for pest control and wildlife suppliers.
  • Accurate NOI use and density documentation minimize reclass/reweigh disputes, cutting unexpected charges and improving invoice predictability.
  • Right-sized crating and internal bracing reduce damage to metal jaws and glass tubes, lowering claim rates and protecting margins on seasonal shipments.
