How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Nest troughs lip-to-lip with corrugated pads between each piece, then strap tightly; note the nested quantity on the BOL and packing list.
- For boxes, use double-wall cartons with foam edge guards around flanges and wood cleats inside so the metal cannot shift during LTL handling.
- For crates, block and brace the troughs to the skid or bolt through mounting holes; add directional arrows so the open side faces up to prevent deformation.
- Label freight as “metal cooling tower troughs, nested, NMFC 187520, Class 85” to avoid reclass, and list outer box/crate dimensions even though class is fixed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing rating disputes.
- Nested packaging lowers cube and can improve LTL rates without changing the assigned class.
- Boxed or crated protection cuts abrasion and bend claims on thin-gauge metal components.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies routing across networks.
