NMFC Description Class
18780.00 Gear Frame Side or Cross Bars:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Bundle same-length bars with 2–3 steel straps and fiber edge protectors; cap threaded or machined ends and place on skids with V‑blocks to prevent rolling.
  2. For lengths over 72 in, use a 96×48 pallet or a custom crate; block and brace to avoid overhang and bending, and mark clearly: Do Not Fork Under Bundle.
  3. Separate bars with corrugated slips or foam to prevent metal-on-metal scuffing; shrink-wrap the bundle so short cross bars cannot migrate during transit.
  4. List exact count and lengths on the BOL, select “Automobile Parts – Gear Frame Side/Cross Bars,” and note packaging type (pallet, crate, bundle) for terminal handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate NMFC 18780 mapping reduces reclass fees and claim exposure on steel or alloy gear-frame bar shipments.
  • Dense, bundled packaging improves cube efficiency and often lowers LTL rates compared to loose or mixed parts.
  • Kitted lengths and consolidated pallets speed dock turns and cut handling charges at cross-dock terminals.
  • Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options for faster scheduling.
