How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 188170 at booking and specify the material: wire‑reinforced burlap/cotton cloth, synthetic fiber cloth, or plastic film with plastic ribs, shipped in packages.
- Bundle rolls or folded sheets tightly; cap or pad any wire or rib ends so they won’t abrade adjacent freight. Stretch-wrap and use corner boards to protect edges.
- Palletize packages on clean, flat decks with no overhang. Keep ribbed film oriented flat to reduce crush risk and strap each bundle at least twice for stability.
- Label clearly: “Upholstery Separators – Class 70.” Include piece count and package type (carton, wrapped bundle, bagged roll) to streamline carrier inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating means predictable LTL pricing for separator materials used in furniture and trim shops, helping control per-load costs.
- One code covers multiple constructions (cloth with wire, synthetic cloth, ribbed plastic film), simplifying SKU mapping and TMS rule sets.
- “In packages” acceptance allows cartons or wrapped bundles, reducing repacking labor and speeding dock turns without specialty containers.
- Non-hazardous status eases carrier onboarding and routing, minimizing accessorial surprises and accelerating transit planning.
