How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book at Class 65 and list NMFC 188320 on the BOL; select “boxes” as the packaging to avoid density-based reclassifications.
- Bag valve stems by SKU, place in inner cartons, then a rigid outer box; fill voids with kraft paper so small metal parts don’t rattle or puncture.
- For pallets, cube small boxes into a master carton or full deck pallet, add corner boards, and stretch-wrap tight; keep labels on two sides for scan visibility.
- Print part numbers, counts, and net weight on each box, and include a packing list to speed receiving and reduce miscounts for high-piece shipments.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 rating delivers predictable LTL quotes and minimizes surprise reclass fees on compact, high-density valve shipments.
- Boxed presentation reduces loss and OS&D claims for small components, lowering total landed cost and improving dock efficiency.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and accelerates tendering, helping secure better freight rates and transit choices.
- Consolidating small cartons into master boxes or pallets reduces handling touches, improving throughput and cutting accessorial risks.
