How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack thermostatic valves and thermostats in sturdy boxes (ECT-32 or stronger). Cushion actuator heads, dials, and terminals; use anti-static bags for electronic thermostats.
- Coil and secure capillary bulbs or sensor probes so they cannot pierce the carton. Bag loose fittings and mounting screws to prevent loss in transit.
- Note “Thermostatic Valves or Thermostats, NOI, Boxed – NMFC 188340, Class 100” on the BOL. No density entry is required for this fixed class.
- For LTL, unitize multiple cartons on a pallet without overhang. Mark orientation only if sensitive components or displays require it.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies rating and quoting, reducing reclass and dispute risk when shipping HVAC and plumbing controls.
- Proper boxing lowers damage rates on metal-bodied valves and delicate thermostat electronics, cutting claim costs and reshipments.
- Faster paperwork: clear NOI language and a single class streamline TMS setup, carrier tenders, and tariff alignment.
- Predictable costs for distributors and OEMs moving mixed SKUs of valves and thermostats on the same pallet.
