How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 188520 and Class 200 on the BOL, mark as non-hazardous, and describe as “Army field kitchen, wheeled” to prevent miscoding as a general trailer.
- Stabilize the unit: chock wheels, apply any parking brake, pin or strap fold-outs and lids, and ship the kitchen empty of fuels and water to reduce risk.
- Protect protrusions and hitch gear: cap the lunette ring or ball hitch, pad exhaust stacks and edges, and use corner protectors under straps to prevent finish damage.
- Match equipment to the move: request liftgate or ramps for LTL, use step-deck/flatbed for oversized kitchens, and schedule secure-site appointments for base or training deliveries.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 200 gives predictable ratings, faster quotes, and fewer density-based reclass disputes.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges.
- Proper blocking and restraint minimize damage claims, preserving readiness for training or field deployment.
- Right-size equipment (flatbed vs. LTL with liftgate) cuts accessorials like redelivery, forklift rental, and detention time.
