How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure all moving parts before pickup: latch restraints, tie off lap bars, and pad brake fins and guide wheels with edge guards to prevent transit abrasion.
- Match packaging to mode: custom racks or A-frames for enclosed vans; heavy timber skids with blocking and bracing for flatbeds; add tarps and moisture barriers for outdoor hauls.
- Lower profile by removing wheel assemblies or decorative shells where permitted; label hardware, document lift points and center of gravity, and use soft slings or spreader bars for loading.
- Show NMFC 188740 and Class 150 on the BOL; include unit serials and rack IDs to speed check-in at parks, refurb shops, or OEM facilities.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 150 rating streamlines LTL quotes and budgeting for seasonal relocations and off-season refurb moves.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and training costs, reducing accessorial exposure when properly crated or racked.
- Purpose-built racks improve cube utilization and curb damage, cutting total cost of risk versus loose-blocked methods.
- Accurate NMFC use minimizes reclass fees and accelerates claims resolution on multi-stop projects and staggered deliveries.
