Notes

Note 189241: NOTE-Applies on vehicles designed to lift articles vertically by mechanical means prior to movement.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Prep the unit: lower forks fully, bleed hydraulic pressure, secure the tiller to the frame, and cap fork tips to prevent punctures to adjacent freight.
  2. Package smart: place on a pallet longer than the fork length (e.g., 48"x72"), block the fork heels, add edge protectors, and band through the frame with two opposing straps.
  3. Stabilize for transit: chock the steer wheels, apply at least two ratchet straps across structural points (not the tiller), and mark “Do Not Lift By Tiller.”
  4. Document precisely: note “hand-operated, non-powered lift truck,” list assembled or knocked down condition, include overall dimensions and fork length, and reference NMFC Note 189241 on the BOL.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate NMFC alignment with Note 189241 reduces reclass disputes and unexpected freight bill adjustments.
  • Robust blocking and banding protect the hydraulic pump and forks, lowering damage claims and replacement costs.
  • Consistent packaging improves cross-dock handling efficiency, cutting terminal dwell and potential accessorial fees.
  • Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and streamlines paperwork, supporting faster quotes and better LTL rates.
