How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack kits in sturdy corrugated boxes; isolate cements and primers in sealed inner containers with absorbent lining, keep cans upright, and cushion tools or patches to prevent puncture.
- Declare hazmat when applicable; include the SDS, proper shipping name per the SDS, and a 24/7 emergency contact on shipping papers. Apply orientation arrows for liquid inner packs.
- Quote and book as Class 70 under NMFC 18950—no density calc needed. Example BOL line: “Body patch/tire repair kits, boxed, Class 70, Hazmat.”
- Palletize tight with no overhang, segregate from heat and incompatibles (e.g., strong oxidizers), and use wrap plus corner boards; add ‘Do Not Stack’ cones if inner cans are fragile.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70—reduces reclass risk and surprise charges.
- Faster quoting and routing—one NMFC item covers common auto body and tire repair kits in boxes.
- Lower claim exposure—boxed inner containment limits leaks and damage to adjacent freight.
- Compliance-driven reliability—proper hazmat docs and markings help avoid refusals, delays, and hazmat accessorials.
