How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Empty the hopper and sweep residue; close and pin feed gates, then zip‑tie control levers. Remove spinner discs or chains, bag hardware, and band loose parts to the frame.
- Block the axle and chock all wheels on a skid. Strap in an X‑pattern over the frame rails, use corner protectors on hopper edges, and wrap controls to keep dust out.
- Measure overall length including the drawbar and coupler. If the tongue detaches, strap it alongside the frame to reduce overlength charges and improve handling.
- Specify loading method: forklift only under reinforced frame points, or a crane with a spreader bar. Never lift by the hopper lip; request flatbed or liftgate as site access requires.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed NMFC Class 150 enables fast, predictable quotes and avoids density disputes or reclass fees.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies insurance and compliance paperwork.
- Proper blocking and bracing cut damage claims, keeping roadwork crews productive and avoiding rental replacements.
- Detaching and securing the tongue can reduce overlength accessorials, helping win better LTL rates and transit options.
