How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Empty the hopper and sweep residue; close and pin feed gates, then zip‑tie control levers. Remove spinner discs or chains, bag hardware, and band loose parts to the frame.
  2. Block the axle and chock all wheels on a skid. Strap in an X‑pattern over the frame rails, use corner protectors on hopper edges, and wrap controls to keep dust out.
  3. Measure overall length including the drawbar and coupler. If the tongue detaches, strap it alongside the frame to reduce overlength charges and improve handling.
  4. Specify loading method: forklift only under reinforced frame points, or a crane with a spreader bar. Never lift by the hopper lip; request flatbed or liftgate as site access requires.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed NMFC Class 150 enables fast, predictable quotes and avoids density disputes or reclass fees.
  • Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies insurance and compliance paperwork.
  • Proper blocking and bracing cut damage claims, keeping roadwork crews productive and avoiding rental replacements.
  • Detaching and securing the tongue can reduce overlength accessorials, helping win better LTL rates and transit options.
