How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Determine density before booking: measure the sealed box or crate externally and weigh the shipment. PCF = weight (lb) ÷ [(L×W×H in)/1728]. Example: 110 lb in a 48×24×20 in crate = ~8.25 PCF.
  2. Pack to immobilize moving parts: chock wheels, tie down axles, pad steering columns, and bag loose hardware. Use foam blocking and corner protection to prevent punctures.
  3. Comply with Item 170: choose a rated crate or strong double-wall box, use proper closures (steel or poly banding, staples, screws), and mark orientation (This Side Up/Do Not Stack) if required.
  4. Plan handling needs: if the boxed/crated unit is bulky, strap it to a pallet for forklift access, and request liftgate or residential delivery when shipping to homes or schools.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based accuracy prevents reweigh/reclass fees and keeps LTL quotes aligned with the final invoice.
  • Crated/boxed packaging reduces transit damage on delicate components like steering, wheel hubs, and body panels—cutting claim costs.
  • Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and speeds tendering during peak seasons.
  • Clear Item 170 compliance builds carrier trust, improving pickup success rates and reducing terminal handling exceptions.
