How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density first: weigh the crated unit, measure outside crate or box dimensions, convert to cubic feet, then divide weight by cube. Example: 520 lb in an 88 x 36 x 50 in crate = 91.7 cu ft; density ≈ 5.7 pcf.
- Right-size the crate to cut unused cube. Remove mirrors, windscreens, and fold bars to lower height so you hit a better density class without sacrificing bracing or padding.
- Secure the bike to the base with wheel chocks and soft straps, then block and brace. Add 3–4 in skid height for forklift tines and orient skids for front and side access.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 190290 – Motorcycle, crated/boxed, 2- or 3-wheeled, electric or internal combustion,” list weight and dimensions, and note density-based class per Item 170.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Control costs by engineering crate size to raise density and qualify for a lower freight class on LTL lanes.
- Reduce reclass and inspection fees with consistent packaging, clear NMFC 190290 references, and accurate cube on the BOL.
- Faster quotes and capacity access: carriers can rate quickly when the shipment is boxed/crated and density is provided.
- Lower claims risk through rigid bases, internal bracing, and forklift-friendly skids that prevent tip-overs and punctures.
