NMFC Description Class
190500.00 VEHICLE PARTS:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Identify each part’s construction and form factor (e.g., steel brake rotors, plastic bumper covers, rubber seals) and list materials on the BOL to guide carrier review.
  2. Drain fluids from any assemblies, cap ports, and isolate electronics; use anti‑static bags and inner cartons for sensors, and band heavy metal parts to pallets.
  3. Prevent edge crush and movement with foam, corrugated pads, blocking, and corner boards; protect studs and sharp edges—e.g., shrink‑wrap rotors with edge guards.
  4. Record exact weight and dimensions and note stackability; photograph packaging before tendering to speed disputes and avoid reclass or additional handling fees.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Reduce reclass risk by clearly stating materials and packaging when the class is N/A, improving carrier confidence and invoice accuracy.
  • Cut damage rates by matching protection to the part: rugged crating for dense metal items and cushioned, form‑fitting packs for fragile plastics.
  • Accelerate quoting by providing standardized descriptions, photos, and cube data, enabling carriers to price quickly and potentially offer density or FAK options.
  • Lower handling costs by palletizing mixed SKUs with partitions, labeling bins, and designing packs for safe mechanical handling.
