How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify metal type and axle style in your BOL (steel, alloy, aluminum; solid or tubular) to prevent reclass and inspection delays.
- Protect threads, hubs, and spindles by capping ends, wrapping with corrugated, and adding wood chocks before banding to a pallet.
- Bundle long axles with dunnage between pieces, then strap in at least three places; use corner boards to stop strap bite.
- Select skids that match axle length to avoid overhang, block to prevent rolling, and keep forklift access points clear.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower damage claims from end protection and blocking, reducing unplanned costs and downtime for shops and assembly lines.
- Cleaner quotes and fewer reweigh/reclass fees by clearly documenting NOI axles and packaging, stabilizing LTL freight rates.
- Faster cross-dock handling when axles are palletized or crated, improving on-time performance for production schedules.
- Better cube efficiency from tight bundles and proper skids, cutting per-unit transportation costs across trailer and ag segments.
