How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 191730 and Class 300; note if shipped loose or crated and list total length to anticipate overlength fees.
- For crated loads, build a rigid frame with blocking and banding at mounting points, add fork-entry skids, and stencil Do Not Stack on panels.
- If shipping loose, secure to a robust skid with steel banding, use edge protectors on rails, cap sharp ends, and wrap bare steel with VCI or corrosion barrier.
- Call out lift points and center of gravity on the package; share photos with the carrier to guide forklift handling and reduce claim risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 300 rating simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass fees and shipment delays.
- Proper crating and blocking dramatically cut damage rates on long structural pieces, lowering claim costs and production downtime.
- Planning for overlength and special handling up front keeps accessorials predictable and protects margins on LTL moves.
- Standard non-hazmat status broadens carrier options, helping secure competitive rates and faster transit for vehicle frame shipments.
