Notes
Note 19238: NOTE-Applies only on mixed packages of shelving, storage units and other articles intended for permanent installation in the interior of service or utility vans.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item fits: steel racks or stands purpose-built for repair vans or service-vehicle interiors, not generic warehouse pallet racking.
- Package to immobilize: bolt bases to a sturdy skid, add blocking for uprights, cap sharp ends, and use banding with edge guards; crate tall, assembled towers to prevent tip-over.
- Capture true size: measure the outermost projections after packaging (hooks, trays, brackets) and note if units are stackable or have a high center of gravity.
- Document clearly: list NMFC 19237 with reference to Note item 19238 on the BOL, include material (steel), piece count, and packaging type (pallet, crate, bundle), and attach photos.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC reference minimizes reclass and reweigh disputes, reducing unexpected charges and delays.
- Alignment with the Automobile Parts Group supports consolidated auto-parts freight and can improve LTL rate programs.
- Robust bracing and edge protection cut paint or powder-coat damage, lowering claims and reship costs.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering and appointment scheduling.
