How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Detach each platform and secure loose hardware (pins, brackets) in a labeled bag; pad sharp edges and cover skid surfaces to prevent abrasion.
- Palletize when possible: nest platforms, block with 2x4 cribbing, then band with two straps per axis; or fully crate for parcel-resistant protection.
- Mark the BOL and labels with “NMFC 192400 – Class 70 – Non-Haz”; include exact piece counts (e.g., 2 platforms + 1 hardware kit) to avoid reclassification.
- Keep weight low and centered; align platform length within pallet footprint to prevent overhang and cross-dock snags during LTL transfers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies rating—no density calculation, fewer billing disputes, and faster quotes for fleet maintenance and upfitters.
- Damage reduction from proper blocking and banding protects coatings and weldments, lowering claims and replacement costs.
- Predictable costing supports multi-stop LTL planning and inventory replenishment for tow, recovery, and car-hauler operations.
- Consolidating multiple platforms per pallet cuts handling touches and accessorial risk, improving on-time performance.
