Notes
Note 193701: NOTE-Articles tendered for shipment on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must be securely fastened to and must not overhang the edges of the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck. Exposed surfaces and edges must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials so as to withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure each packaged bundle and compute density to set the class. Example: a 48x96x30 in stack at 1,200 lb = 80 cu ft and 15 pcf, trending toward a lower class.
- Package panels flat on pallets with rigid edge protectors, corner boards, and top/bottom sheets. Use stretch wrap and two to three steel or poly bands with guards to prevent strap bite.
- Protect finishes and cores from moisture—especially ceiling tiles and insulation boards—by adding a poly liner or moisture barrier wrap, and label as Fragile Panels/Do Not Double Stack when appropriate.
- Verify applicability of NMFC note item 193701 for special constructions or facings, and include clear piece counts and pallet dimensions on the BOL for accurate LTL rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density capture minimizes reclass fees and disputes, keeping LTL invoices predictable within the 65–175 class window.
- Robust edge and surface protection reduces chips, crumbles, and corner crush, cutting claim rates on delicate wallboard and ceiling tiles.
- Tight unitization and right-sized pallets improve cube efficiency and can increase pcf, often qualifying for a lower, more economical class.
- Non-hazardous commodity status broadens carrier options and simplifies routing, speeding quotes and scheduling for jobsite or distributor deliveries.
