How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm packaging fits the rule: use sturdy boxes or wood crates, then note the exact package type and count on the BOL (e.g., 6 boxes washers, 1 crate spiral-wound gaskets).
  2. Calculate density for each handling unit: length × width × height (inches) ÷ 1,728 = cubic feet; weight ÷ cubic feet = PCF. Example: 18×18×12 in, 48 lb → 2.25 cu ft → 21.3 PCF.
  3. Protect by material: bag loose metal washers to contain count, keep fiber/cork gaskets dry with poly liners, and use edge guards/flat dunnage so large gaskets don’t warp.
  4. Label the NMFC and density on paperwork: “NMFC 194120, NOI, boxed/crated, density ____ PCF.” This speeds rating and reduces reclass risk under Item 170.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density rating can lower class on heavy, compact washer loads, reducing LTL charges without changing carriers or lanes.
  • Purposeful packaging—smaller, well-filled cartons for dense parts or a single protective crate for fragile gasket sets—cuts damage and OS&D costs.
  • One NOI item for mixed washers, gaskets, and packing shapes streamlines consolidation and simplifies quoting across vendors and plants.
  • Clear Item 170 compliance and documented PCF minimize inspections, reclass fees, and delays, improving cycle time and cash predictability.
