Notes
Note 194562: NOTE-Applies only on scrap or waste of not nitrated transparent cellulose film, such as commonly used for wrapping purposes.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify composition before tendering: identify if the scrap includes nitrate-based film versus regenerated cellulose (cellophane). Apply Note 194562 and treat as hazardous when applicable.
- Package based on risk: use tight bales with poly liners inside sturdy gaylords for non-reactive streams, or UN-rated 4G cartons/1A2 drums with absorbent for hazardous film waste.
- Prepare documentation: include SDS or composition statement, waste profile, NMFC 194560 with Note 194562 on the BOL, emergency contact info, and HAZMAT details required by DOT/49 CFR.
- Pre-clear with carriers: confirm hazmat acceptance, pickup conditions (no heat sources, no sparks), and provide counts and weights. Request limited access or special handling if the load contains old nitrate film.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces reclass bills and hazmat penalty fees by aligning packaging and paperwork with Note 194562.
- Optimized packaging (dense bales or UN-rated drums) lowers handling risk, curbs claims, and can unlock better LTL rates for waste movements.
- Clear hazard identification helps secure carrier approvals faster, preventing missed pickups and costly reschedules.
- Waste-stream segregation (nitrate vs non-nitrate) enables compliant routing and may allow consolidation that cuts per-pound transportation cost.
