How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use leak-resistant packaging: poly-lined boxes or food-grade drums for wet pomace or skins; double-bag liners to prevent seepage and odor.
- Mark the BOL precisely: “Apple/Pear Waste – Not Dried/Not Frozen, NMFC 194630, Class 60, Non-Haz.” to avoid reclass and inspection delays.
- Palletize tight and square; keep drums upright with ring locks. Add absorbent pads and stretch-wrap to contain moisture during LTL transfers.
- Book promptly after processing to reduce spoilage smells. Choose standard service (no temperature control) unless shipper SOPs require cooler transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies pricing and quoting—no density calculations or reweigh-driven reclass fees.
- Moisture-ready packaging reduces leakage claims and cleanup/accessorial charges at terminals and delivery sites.
- Clear labeling and grouping under Waste Materials speeds dock handling and minimizes detention at pickup.
- Bulk moves of seasonal byproducts lower disposal costs and can support downstream uses (feedstock, fermentation) for added value.
