How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Contain fines and dust: use heavy-duty corrugated boxes lined with poly to prevent sifting. If collected in bags, place those bags inside boxes or drums to match carrier expectations for Class 70 waste.
- Control moisture to reduce odor and settling. For damp sweepings, line boxes, double-tape seams, and add absorbent pads to keep residue from escaping during transit.
- Palletize tight and stable. Example: stack uniform boxes on a 48x40 pallet, add a slip sheet on top, then stretch-wrap and corner-board to stop sifting and improve stackability.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 195000 Hop Kiln Sweepings, non-hazardous, Class 70,” include total weight, box count, and pickup site details for receiving compliance.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70—no density calculation and fewer reclass risks.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and specialized carrier restrictions, keeping costs lower.
- Boxed units cube efficiently, enabling economical LTL consolidation and backhauls from hop-growing regions post-harvest.
- Leak- and odor-resistant packaging reduces damage claims and cleanup accessorials, improving net freight spend.
