How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity on the BOL as “Hulls, velvet bean, in bags — NMFC 195060, Class 65” and include bag count, pallet count, and total weight.
- Use sturdy bags (woven poly or multiwall paper) with secure tie-offs. Palletize tightly, keep bags inside the pallet footprint, and stretch-wrap with top sheets to contain fines.
- Protect from moisture and contamination. Add a poly liner or slip sheet on pallets and avoid stacking under liquids or odor-heavy freight.
- Quote and book at fixed Class 65 rather than density-based. Example: 40 bags x 50 lb on one pallet, 2,000 lb total, non-hazardous.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 65 simplifies budgeting and LTL rate shopping.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and reduces accessorial risk.
- Bagged, contained product lowers spill cleanup exposure and claim frequency.
- Accurate NMFC use prevents reclass fees, inspections, and costly shipping delays.
