How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy boxes or closed-head drums lined with heavy plastic to contain shards. Limit each container’s weight to a manageable level to prevent crush and puncture.
- Palletize tightly: band or strap containers, add corner boards, and wrap to the pallet footprint. Mark pallets “Broken Pottery Wire Insulators – Scrap” for clear handling.
- Note on the BOL: “NMFC 195090, Insulators, electric wire, NOI, pottery, broken, Class 55, Non-hazardous.” List piece count by boxes/drums and the pallet count.
- Keep material clean of oils or PCB residues from legacy equipment. Carriers may request lined drums if fragments are sharp; add top-load restrictions if boxes are light.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating at Class 55 reduces surprises in LTL quotes and helps budget scrap returns from field projects or utility decommissions.
- Simple classification (no density requirement) speeds up booking and minimizes reclass fees, especially across multi-stop scrap recovery programs.
- Durable packaging guidance lowers damage claims and disposal cleanup costs while improving carrier acceptance for ceramic waste.
- Efficient backhaul option for recyclers and utilities: consolidate broken insulators to fewer pallets, lowering per-pound freight spend.
