How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify on the BOL: “NMFC 195190, Magnesium Carbonate, spent, Class 60, non-hazardous,” and list packaging (boxes or drums) to prevent reclass billing.
- Use sealed liners inside sturdy boxes or closed-head drums to control dust and moisture; add absorbent pads if residual dampness is possible.
- Palletize tightly: keep boxes/drums upright, band or shrink-wrap, and avoid overhang to reduce handling damage and spill clean-up charges.
- Confirm the material is truly spent with value only for reconditioning; attach SDS and any recycler acceptance letters to streamline carrier acceptance.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies rating and tenders, giving more predictable LTL costs than density-based items.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and special handling, lowering total landed cost for waste returns.
- Accurate labeling and packaging reduce reclass and cleanup charges, protecting margins on reverse logistics.
- Supports circular economy programs by moving reclaimable sorbent/filtration fines back to reconditioners efficiently.
