How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose the correct subclass: chenille-covered steel wire versus steel wire twisted with cut fibers. These map to two classes within 77.5–250—confirm wording with your supplier and carrier.
- Pack in rigid boxes with coil ties or spools to prevent kinks and crushing. Add VCI wrap or poly liners plus desiccants to deter rust and contain loose fibers.
- Fill voids with dense dunnage and use double‑wall corrugate for stack strength. Mark boxes “Do Not Crush” if coils could deform under top load.
- Print NMFC 197750, the selected class, piece count, and net weight on the BOL and outer labels. Photograph sealed boxes to document condition for claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate subclass selection avoids reclass fees and surprise invoices when shipping fiber-covered steel wire products.
- Robust boxed packaging cuts coil deformation and abrasion damage, reducing returns and improving customer satisfaction.
- Palletizing multiple boxes improves handling efficiency and can qualify for better LTL rates through fewer touchpoints.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies tendering, accelerating dock turns and pickup scheduling.
