How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference the related note (item 198972) on the BOL to show the correct path for firkins, buckets, tubs, kits, and pails.
- Nest empty containers to reduce cube; bag or interleave with kraft paper, and use corrugated boxes or tight shrink-wrap. Add rim guards for metal pails.
- Palletize on 40x48 inches, avoid overhang, use a cap sheet and corner boards, then strap and stretch-wrap. Label as “Empty Containers” for clarity.
- List material (plastic, metal, or wood), piece count, and whether lids are attached or packed separately. Record overall dimensions after nesting.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC mapping lowers reclass risk and surprise billing.
- Nesting and kit packing boost units per pallet, cutting freight cost per container.
- Non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat surcharges.
- Rim/lid protection reduces damage claims and replacement costs across lanes.
