How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack plates, sheets, or strips in rigid boxes with interleaving (foam or paper) and edge guards to prevent enamel chipping and corner dents.
- Palletize the boxed units flat with no overhang, add a top board, then strap and stretch-wrap; mark “This Side Up – Do Not Stack” if the enamel is brittle or glossy.
- List NMFC item 200870 and Class 77.5 on the BOL, include piece and box counts, and describe the freight as “enameled zinc plate/sheet/strip, boxed” for clean inspections.
- Provide total pallet dimensions and weight for pickup planning, and ensure forklift access; moisture control (desiccants or vapor barriers) helps if transit humidity is high.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 77.5 eliminates density debates and cuts the risk of costly reclass and rebill charges.
- Broader carrier access and fewer fees: non-hazardous material avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies tendering.
- Damage avoidance saves claims: boxed packaging and proper bracing protect enamel finishes used in architectural and appliance components.
- Faster quoting and routing: one clear NMFC item streamlines TMS setup, improves rate shopping, and supports just‑in‑time production schedules.
