Notes
Note 201051: NOTE-Applies only on inserts that are designed for imbedding in concrete for the purpose of anchoring or fastening.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure weight and outer dimensions to compute PCF (lb per cubic foot). Use Item 170 density tiers to set the class before tendering.
- Match packaging to form: powder and dust in sealed bags or pails inside boxes; shavings and borings in lined drums; castings and stampings blocked in crates.
- Note special items: threaded concrete inserts may fall under Item 201051 per note; verify part type and declare accordingly to avoid reclass.
- Protect sensitive pieces like chrome- or brass-plated couplings with dividers and film wrap; for mossy zinc or scrap, prevent moisture and contain fines.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize density with tight pack-outs to hit lower classes under Item 170 and reduce LTL spend.
- Right-size packaging (boxes, crates, drums) cuts damage rates on castings, rods, and wire, lowering claim costs and cycle time.
- Accurate declarations for powders, scrap, and trophy parts prevent carrier reclass fees and invoice disputes.
- Segregating remelt scrap and machining fines streamlines recycling lanes and captures better freight rates on repeat moves.
