How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use Class 50 on the bill of lading; no density entry needed. Describe as filtering balls (cement/clay/porcelain) and note packaging as boxes, bags, or drums.
- For boxed shipments: choose double‑wall cartons, fill voids to stop sphere movement, palletize, then strap and stretch‑wrap. Add corner boards for porcelain to prevent chipping.
- If shipping in bags or drums: line bags to contain dust, keep pallets dry, and secure drums with rings and two straps per direction. Mark as non‑hazardous mineral media.
- Avoid contamination and damage: cover pallets, don’t co‑load with strong odors or fine powders, and limit top‑stacking unless packaging is crush‑rated.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 enables predictable LTL rates and fast, consistent quoting—no density calculations or reweigh surprises.
- Non‑hazardous designation avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies documentation, shortening tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Recognized packaging (bags, boxes, drums) reduces reclassification risk and inspection fees, lowering total landed cost.
- Durable, inert media co‑loads well with industrial freight, improving trailer utilization and cutting per‑unit shipping expense.
