How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle poles or splits tightly with plastic or steel banding, cap both ends, and wrap the contact points; note NMFC 21460 and Class 85 on the BOL.
- Control length risks: for pieces over 8 ft, pre-alert carriers and mount on a skid with spreader boards and fork-entry slats to prevent bending.
- Protect from scuffing and moisture: use breathable wrap or kraft paper with edge guards; avoid fully sealing green bamboo to reduce condensation.
- Keep bundles single-layer on pallets, mark lift points and center of gravity, and use no-crush cones to deter top-stacking during cross-dock moves.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating delivers predictable LTL pricing and reduces reclass disputes for bamboo shipments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier availability and speeds tendering, especially for seasonal landscaping and retail projects.
- Package-friendly rules let you ship bundled poles efficiently, lowering handling time and damage-related claims.
- Clear NMFC reference streamlines quoting and claims, improving compliance for importers, garden centers, and event builders.
